Controls on shallow landslide size

چکیده
Most distributed slope-stability models for shallow landslide prediction neglect the forces acting on the sidewalls of landslide scars. Back-calculations and field observations, however, show that lateral root strength is a primary control on size and location of shallow landslides in soil mantled hillslopes. Here we report a theory that estimates landslide width, assuming that root strength acts primarily through a perimeter boundary. The model predicts that landslide width increases with increasing root strength and decreasing slope, as larger masses of soil are needed to overcome resisting forces. Perhaps surprisingly, the drier the soil, the larger the landslide mass (and width), whereas the water table rise reduces the size needed for failure. The comparison of the model results with field data suggests that landslide size is controlled by the local patchiness of soil thickness, root strength and topographically-driven relative saturation.

The prediction of shallow landslide location and size using a multidimensional landslide analysis in a digital terrain model
Shallow landslides on steep slopes often mobilize as debris flows. The size of the landslide controls the initial size of the debris flows, defines the sediment discharge to the channel network, affects rates and scales of landform development, and influences the relative hazard potential. Currently the common practice in digital terrain-based models is to set the landslide size equal to an arb...
متن کاملA multidimensional stability model for predicting shallow landslide size and shape across landscapes
The size of a shallow landslide is a fundamental control on both its hazard and geomorphic importance. Existing models are either unable to predict landslide size or are computationally intensive such that they cannot practically be applied across landscapes. We derive a model appropriate for natural slopes that is capable of predicting shallow landslide size but simple enough to be applied ove...
متن کاملParameterization of soil properties for a model of topographic controls on shallow landsliding: application to Rio de Janeiro
A key problem in the use of physically based models of landslide hazards is how to parameterize the representation of soil properties. We applied a physically based model for the topographic control on shallow landsliding (SHALSTAB) to two catchments in Rio de Janeiro to investigate the accuracy of model results in relation to parameterization of soil properties. In so doing, we address the rel...
متن کاملShallow landsliding, root reinforcement, and the spatial distribution of trees in the Oregon Coast Range
The influence of root reinforcement on shallow landsliding has been well established through mechanistic and empirical studies, yet few studies have examined how local vegetative patterns influence slope stability. Because root networks spread outward from trees, the species, size, and spacing of trees should influence the spatial distribution of root strength. We documented the distribution an...

Various methods are currently used in order to predict shallow landslides within the catchment scale. Among them, physically based models present advantages associated with the physical description of processes by means of mathematical equations. The main objective of this research is the prediction of shallow landslides using TRIGRS model, in a pilot catchment located at Serra do Mar mountain ...
